JAGUAR’S BIG CATS STRUTT THEIR STUFF AT BRISBANE’S SOUTH BANK - Display Day August 21st 2005

Words by:  David and Kate McKnight

There were over 140 Jaguars looking their finest, all on show for this year’s Jaguar Drivers club of Queensland Annual Display Day and Concours.

The sunny city aspect and Brisbane River provided a glamorous backdrop for the classic cats of Queensland as they settled into their model types along the shores of the Cultural Forecourt.

Approximately 6000 people passed through South Bank to view the Jags that had travelled from far and near to be on show.

South Bank praised the organisers and JDCQ for the professionalism of the display and its organisation. The Jaguars looked sensational, and the club members themselves were great ambassadors for the JDCQ as they welcomed the many thousands that passed through to admire their classic and modern vehicles.

It was a privilege to award the prizes to the competitors, and a delight to find that a number of new members have taken on the Concours with a great deal of skill and dedication.

The debut of The Road Class category and restructuring some aspects of the competition seemed to generate some new enthusiasm for concours.  30 cars entered the competitions, which is a great show of support.   Changes and modifications with a uniquely Queensland approach were developed to encourage more club members to show their cars and participate in concours competitions. In recent years entries in concours had been falling away, so it was important to take a fresh look at how to bring back regulars to the fold, and to welcome in new enthusiasts.

The d’Elegance field this year gave members the chance to experience underside judging. Three had entered in this category. It was a wonderful effort to see these fine cars fully prepared, however it seems that underside preparation deters many rather than encourages them. This is even more evident when the other categories of d’Etat and Road Class were filled to capacity.

With concours it important to always give members opportunities, and be ready to review and welcome changes that foster an enjoyable, equalised and inviting competition.   The JDCQ couldn’t be happier with the participation in concours this year.  It is a credit to the club members, and we thank everyone sincerely.

It is important to thank the organising committee, the judges and the army of volunteers who did a great job. Each one of them put in 110 percent, making the day a spectacular event to remember.  Also too, our register secretaries did a champion job in gathering their groups together for display, with members bringing along cars not often seen, and it was a privilege to have them with us on Display Day.

On behalf of the JDCQ, thanks to our major sponsor Brisbane City Jaguar for their generous support and use of their service department hoists for the underbody judging. The sponsorship given by Brisbane City Jaguar is greatly appreciated and it is hoped that next year we can enjoy their support and assistance again.

Thank you to the team, and the members. It is hoped that everyone enjoyed the day and will support it again next year.
